10 SEO tips that every web designer should know

10 tips to propose this, in my view, basic to streamline the design work.

1. Use CSS

Often encounter on different network sites, signed 2009, created entirely in pure HTML without the use of style sheets, and then crippled an important support that brings many benefits:
  • More compatible with other Web Browser.
  • Excellent separation between content and graphic design.
  • Possibility to make layout more complex than those possible with tables.
  • Reduced weight of the pages with a consequent decrease loading times.
  • Ability to change the look of the site, even significantly, by changing only one file.
  • Improving the accessibility and visibility to alternative media: PDAs, cell phones, screen readers, text browsers, and printers.
  • The css is located at the top of the source code, ensuring better indexing of your pages.
Only drawback is that some older browsers do not interpret them correctly.
For this W3Schools has sought to give a statistical definitive the most widely used browsers in the world accompanied by relevant statistics monthly.
To check if our layout is visible on all web browsers, we can use free services that create previews of our site.

2. Optimize code

In addition to optimizing the structure of a web page, also the CSS code can be improved by avoiding unnecessary duplication or redundancy.
The classic example is the settings of the margins or padding:

You can also write a document in css on one line, but then it would be unreadable for both yourself and others.
Remember to write a good format to your source! There are several free tools on the web that can help.
Council to try StyleNeat that could become a valuable tool for your formatting.

3. Avoid Frame

On the net there is enough noise around this topic and I do not want to make more.
For this reason I carry a part of the standard adopted by the National Centre for Information Technology in Public Administration in which it is said that:
It is not permitted to use the frame in the creation of new sites.
In the first application to existing Web sites already made frame is allowed to use HTML 4.01 or XHTML 1.0 with DTD frameset, but with the following warnings:
  • avoid using, within the markup language in which the page is made, elements and attributes to define the presentation features of the page (for example, characteristics of the font, text color and background, etc.. ), instead of using style sheets, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to achieve the same visual effect
  • to ensure that every frame has a meaningful title to facilitate identification and navigation, if necessary, also describe the purpose of the frames and their relationship

4. Do not use nested tables

Nested tables are tables inside other tables.
It is very discouraged their use because the spiders find it difficult to read the contents of each cell with a resulting loss of indexing some content.
Use the div with CSS is a very good solution and can not only optimize the code, but also to obtain a good level of content indexing.

5. Do not overuse Keyword

The key words describing the content of a page.
It is therefore important to make them appear in strategic places, such as: url, title and description.
It is often useful in the body of content, but without straining! You may incur penalties for too many keywords.

6. Determine the best Keyword

Without abuse we have to analyze the best keywords, so you get good placement in SERP.
We are meeting various web services, identifying those key words related to our environment, good to use to have little competition.
I suggest you read my article Less is better, Where I explain a great free tool to analyze our keyword.

7. Avoid the use of Flash menus

In addition to having loading times longer than normal to HTML, Flash is strongly recommended for the creation of navigation menus because the search engines have difficulty reading and following the links used for navigation.
A site created entirely in Flash has some major disadvantages for indexing on Google and search engines general.
You can try to divide the site into small pieces to insert flash in a normal html page, so you can optimize keywords, title and tags.

8. Use unique titles for each page

Each page of the site should have the title attribute, unique for each page, so if you use the same title, the search engines think that every page is the same argument.

9. Work on your image

Do not neglect the weight of the images that you put in as lightening the load times are cut in half the page!
In fact, you have several tools, free, to achieve this goal.
One of them is Image Optimizer a great free tool that allows you to greatly alleviate the weight of your images.
Do not neglect to build the ALT, an essential element of you need to enter information on the images of web pages in case of their absence.
The TITLE attribute, however, is to provide some additional information to the image and follows the same rules that should be used for the title of a web page.
Be brief, summarize the content of the post and can capture their attention.
Alt is preferable to the Title tag which is why search engines often make reference to identify the contents of an image and then using the right keywords will have a better indexing in the SERP.
Here I report a video made by Matt Cutts on the importance of the alt attribute in images:

10. Beware URL

As we all know, the structure of our url is essential for a good search engine indexing in terms of keywords in it. We also know that blogging platforms like Word Press, allow a rewrite of the url of our posts, which facilitates our search engine optimization.
Here is a brief list of tips for optimizing the structure of the url of the post on our site:
  • Describe the contents - The basic structure of the first url should contain a description of the contents of the page.
  • Be brief
  • URLs are case-sensitive
  • Use hyphens high (-) to separate words
  • Do not spam
  • Used static rather than dynamic URL
